Painful Sex
"I'm experiencing painful sex
and my bartholin gland is irritated"

Dear Jacqui,
I have been experiencing painful intercourse and went to the Doctor to be examined. I was diagnosed with Bacterial Vaginosis and treated with Metro-pills. She also told me that my Bartholin gland may be irritated; however told me to take warm baking soda baths or to use warm compresses on my vaginal area to suppress the swelling. I do not have swelling nor could she actually feel where I was describing the pain to her. Should I get a second opinion? Thank you for your immediate response,
Patsy

Dear Patsy,
I assume by now you have run through the course of the medication. Are you engaging in intimacy now and do you still experience pain? It is a fact that Bacterial Vaginosis, if it is not treated can spread easily and cause pelvic inflammatory disease, which might have happened in your case. Sometimes BV requires prolonged or even repeated treatments. It is also possible that your partner may require treatment if recurrent infections are a problem.

And, by the way, I have posted in depth information about BV on our www.veryprivate.com website if you would like to learn more about it. Taking these possibilities into consideration, and I don't know what the status quo is at this time, I would trust my feelings. If you don't have real good trust in the doctor who diagnosed it, you might do well be getting a second opinion.

However, I would give your doctor a call and first discuss with her what the outcome of the treatment it. Sitzbath with baking soda cannot hurt you but using the wrong cleansing products can. I suggest you become especially careful not to use any products in the vaginal area containing fragrance, chemical coloring or additives including plant additives.

They can easily destroy the delicate vaginal balance, which then allows bacteria to overgrow. I recommend you use a pH balanced very mild soap or the Very Private pH balanced Body Wash, which we developed specifically because there are so few pure products available.

Body Wash also contains an ingredient to help protect you against vaginal irritations just by washing daily. You can find it on the www.veryprivate.com under products. Also, if the infection is still present, do not use a washcloth but cleanse with cotton that you can toss. Best wishes for quick recovery.

Jacqui
