Dear Jacqui,
I'm a 65-year-old female, just diagnosed with bone loss. My doctor just prescribed Fosamax for me and I have a history of ulcerative colitis. Would I be exposed to possible gastrointestinal complications in my colon area? Amber

Dear Amber,
I can't tell you if Fosamax will have a negative effect on your colon because your health history is personal. But what I can tell you that many women who tried Fosomax have had different stomach and intestinal symptoms and could not tolerate the drug. There are several other prescriptions and non-prescription drugs which protect against bone loss or even build bone that you should discuss with your physician.

Also, there are numerous studies that confirm that exercises that put stress on your bones are extremely helpful in rebuilding bone. An appropriate exercise program tailored to the weak areas of your body should be especially beneficial.
