I'm pregnant, will using a personal
lubricant harm the baby?"

Dear Jacqui,
I'm 18 weeks pregnant - will using a personal lubricant, such as K-Y Jelly, harm the baby? Thanks.
Veronica

Dear Veronica,
K-Y Jelly is the generic term for several KY products which are made by Johnson & Johnson. For safety's sake, please contact them directly and tell them exactly which product you are using so they can check the content of ingredients and advise you properly.

For general purposes it is advisable to use a product that's pH balanced, hypo-allergenic, fragrance and flavor free and not containing any extra additives such as vitamins or aloe which may change the vaginal pH. It is also advisable to use an intimate moisturizer that gives more protection to the vaginal tissue.

Many lubricants such as Astroglide were developed for the homosexual market and are extremely thin. Some of J&J's lubricants were developed for medical rectal and/or gynecological examination purposes but are wiped off after use because they leave unwanted residue. Wishing you a good pregnancy and healthy baby. Also, if a vaginal lubricant is not FDA licensed, don't use it.
