Articles: What is Vulvodynia and can it be treated?

Vulvodynia is a well known medical condition that may encompass pain during sexual intercourse, including severe pain during orgasm and/or a burning sensation during ejaculation and sputtering during intimacy. The condition may also include discomfort, even pain, or a burning sensation when the vulva is touched or stimulated. In some cases the female sexual organs feel raw and irritated, as to make physical intimacy undesirable.

What causes Vulvodynia?
Medical opinion believes that the condition is related to Interstitial Cystitis (IC), a disorder of the adult urinary tract that is most common in women but can affect men. However, the exact cause for vulvodynia or IC have not been identified. Medical professionals speculate that, like IC, Vulvodynia has imflammatory, neuropathic, dietary and psychological components.

Is there a treatment?
At the American Urological Conference in 2002, a study was presented that the oral bioflavonoid, Cysta-Q, proved effective for women with Interstitial Cystitis, not Vulvodynia. The study has been published in leading US urological journals.
