"I keep getting one yeast
infection after another"

Dear Jacqui:
I don't understand what's happening to me. I keep getting one yeast infection after another. I've used the same medication each time and it cleared up but then came back. Could it be that I am getting it from my boyfriend?
Melissa

Dear Melissa:
Yes, it is possible that you may catch your yeast infection from your partner but the probability is low. The yeast fungus likes a warm, moist environment to grow, like the vagina , whereas the male sexual organ is usually dry, because it's exposed to air, which discourages the growth of the fungus.

Men can develop the disease through frequent contact with a female partner who has been infected. If they are infected, they may not show any symptoms at all or only minor ones such as tiny bumps on the penis, or they may experience some itching.

It is quite possible that your do not have recurrent yeast infections but the cause might be a bacterial infection that needs gynecological evaluation. If that is the case, your yeast medication cannot cure the problem, you need antibiotics.

Only a microscopic evaluation of the organism can give you a definitive answer. If it turns out to be a bacterial infection, suggest to your boyfriend to be checked as well. You don't want to keep passing the bug back and forth.
