Dear Jacqui:
My doctor said I have no infections but I still have a slight odor especially after I work out. Is that normal with age or after having a child?
Clara

Dear Clara:
Yes, it is quite natural that after working out you can detect vaginal odor, partially due to perspiration and other bacteria that definitely emit an odor. Bacteria and fungi like warm, damp places.

I suggest you use a pH balanced soap or body wash that's free of fragrance, chemical colors or plant additives for cleansing to help you keep the vaginal environment healthy. Keep in mind a scented product only mask an odor but can cause your natural vaginal pH to break down, and it is one of your body's natural protectors against irritation and infection.

As to your other questions, yes, the vaginal pH changes as we mature and tends to become more alkaline and less acidic. When that happens, infections occur more easily. But having given birth is not associated with your odor problem.

Jacqui
