"Nasty odor! My husband says
something's wrong,
my doctor says no."

Dear Jacqui,
I have been to the doctor and they said I do not have an infection yet I still have a nasty odor down there and I try everything from douches to crèmes? My husband insists that I have something wrong with me yet the doctor says I don't. Why would I have an odor? And most of the time it is after I have an orgasm.
Sally

Dear Sally,
There are quite a number of women who experience a definite odor present after orgasm. It many cases this is caused by your body's own reaction to the presence of semen in the vagina. This is not unusual or unnatural.

Once ejaculation occurs a particular group of "amines" is released. They indeed have a noticeable "fishy" odor. It is quite possible that this is what the two of you notice. Douching or using vaginal deodorants or rinses are not advisable. These kinds of products often disturb the natural, healthy vaginal pH which can then lead to irritations or infections.

Just use lukewarm water for rinsing after intercourse. Better yet, use a pH balanced soap or body wash, such as Very Private Body Wash which is very mild and contains no fragrance, no chemical colors or plant materials. For your "nose" I suggest you use a couple of drops of your favorite perfume and rub it into your skin at the very top line of your pubic hair, definitely not in the vaginal area, inside or out.

Jacqui
