"My period is very minimal. Could this be
because I am pregnant now?"

Dear Jacqui:
The other day I started my period and my boyfriend and I decided that this time of the month was probably the safest time to have unprotected sex. While we didn't use a condom, he also did not ejaculate inside of me. The problem now though is that my period is very minimal and it seems to be older blood now.

I should be on the third day of my period, but it seems to be slowing down. Could this be because I am pregnant now? It seems unlikely, but in the past when I have had sex on my period, it didn't stop but rather flowed regularly. What do you think the problem here is?
Alice

Dear Alice:
Having a shorter period can be due to a number of causes such as changes in hormone levels, stress, dietary changes, even heavy exercising can cause menstrual interruptions or changes. It does not automatically mean that you are pregnant.

For you to have peace of mind it might be easiest to use one of the home pregnancy test kits which you can pick up at any drugstore, though I don't believe from what you tell me pregnancy is the cause of a shorter menstruation. If, on the other hand, irregular periods become the rule rather than the exception it might be advisable to see a gynecologist and have your hormone levels checked. Being protective of your health is always right and is the gift you should give yourself.

Jacqui
