"I've noticed increased
discharge after having my
first sexual intercourse with my husband"

Dear Jacqui,
I was a virgin until I got married. I usually had some type of discharge from my vagina, but after having my first sexual intercourse with my husband I noticed the discharge increased and is more liquid. Is this normal?
Judy

Dear Judy,
Discharge can be natural after sexual intercourse or an indicator of a vaginal infection, especially if is continuous and has a smell. If it is an infection you need a medical treatment to clear it up, and only a doctor can identify the nature of the infection.

Most are quite harmless and can be cured in a matter of days. Sometimes discharge is connected to changing hormone activity. I suggest that you plan a visit with a gynecologist just to make sure. In general I suggest you avoid scented soaps and body washes in the vaginal area and avoid sitting in bubble baths with fragrance.

Never use douches or vaginal sprays. They, as well as products containing fragrance, hormones, chemical colors often destroy the healthy vaginal pH, which protects you against vaginal infections and irritations. Use a pH balanced soap or Body Wash such as Very Private for proper vaginal hygiene. It is also a good idea to drink a glass of cranberry juice to help keep your urinary tract free of infection and always void after intercourse.
