Gardnerella is a bacteria, which is always present in the vagina in small numbers. When, however, the vaginal balance is disturbed and the Gardnerella bacteria multiplies it replaces other normal bacteria such as the lactobacillus causing uncomfortable symptoms.

Gardnerella can be passed through sexual contact with an infected person.
