I've noticed a foamy substance around
my vagina after sexual activity."

Dear Jacqui:
Hello. I noticed a foamy substance around my vaginal opening and labia after sexual activity this weekend. It had no odor, taste and was not irritating. Is this normal or a sign of infection?

Dear Geri:
My question to you is, did you use a lubricant or contraceptive? What you describe is a condition that readers have told us about when using lubricants with chemical additives such as fragrance or flavoring agents. It could also be a reaction from a contraceptive that you don't tolerate. Be sure when you use vaginal products that they are pH balanced and have no additives, no fragrance, no flavoring, no vitamins, no hormones-- the purer the better.

Also, if you use a lubricant be sure that it is FDA tested. I suggest you read our article "Don't Let Common Vaginal Problems Interfere with Sexual Intimacy" under the Vaginal Health subject in our Advice page.

You will find a great deal of information about common vaginal irritations and infections and learn if your problem is similar to the ones described. If you notice continued discharge it is advisable to see a gynecologist or your general practitioner to rule out a bacterial or fungal infection.
