For a happier, more intimate relationship.
"Are you loosing your crowning glory?"

Each time you shampoo, do you have a bunch of hair in your hands, comb or styling brush? Each time you wake up, do you note a number of hairs on your pillow? And when you look in the mirror you wonder - where has my wonderful head of hair gone? Panic!

Hair, one of the most treasured feminine assets does not suddenly disappear overnight. But unfortunately is quite a common problem. Hair thinning is usually inherited from either your mother's or father's side. Before menopause 13% of women experience the condition, after menopause hair thinning affects 37% of females. Hair begins to grow more slowly during a woman's mid-twenties. During menopause, when hormones levels are reduced, hair loss accelerates. Additionally, certain hormonal therapies including Progesterone are known to inhibit the formation of new hair follicles. If sudden hair loss occurs, it may be due to a medical condition and a check with your doctor or dermatologist is strongly recommended.

What are the first signs of trouble? You may become conscious of hair loss when looking in the mirror, you hairdo just doesn't look "right" anymore no matter which way you try to comb or style it. It looks stringy or skimpy, or you may even detect a couple of bare spots. That's the time to consider a treatment to stop hair from thinning. The best known over-the-counter medication for women is RogaineŽ2%, also available at Walgreen's under the generic name Minoxidil 2%.The active ingredients in both products are exactly the same. Both will slow down hair loss, and most likely stimulate new hair to grow.

What are the positives and negatives of these products? Both are topical solutions that require application on the crown of the head and the massaging into the scalp twice a day. Furthermore, you have to continue daily applications for up to two years to have maximum success. That's a commitment in time and money and requires a willingness to put up with the daily treatment nuisance. Each product is a little runny when applied. Both are alcohol based and tend to dry hair. Results vary greatly. Some women notice re-growth beginning after three months (about one inch). For others it may take four to six months for re-growth to be noticeable. Some individuals report that the new hair is different in manageability and feel from their original hair. A number of users complained about breakage to the old hair when using a hot dryer. They did not experience this problem before starting treatment. Generally dermatologists and hair specialists suggest to shampoo twice a week only and avoid rigorous brushing of the hair which may cause further breakage or loss. They also advocate minimal use of hot dryers or curlers.

From the research departments of the manufacturers we learned that the greatest benefit from the treatment is seen from five months to 2 years. The data further documents that women are generally more sensitive to side effects of Minoxidil, the active ingredient in both products. In some women it will stimulate the growth of facial hair during the treatment. Others women may experience decreasing blood pressure. When the medication is stopped, the beneficial effects, as well as potential side effects, will gradually wear off and the previous pattern of hair loss will reoccur. For some patients the treatment will have limited results, they may only experience a lessening of hair loss but no actual re-growth.
