Menopause & Menstruation
"Lately I've been having
irregular periods,
what's wrong?"

Dear Jacqui:
Lately I've been having irregular periods. It's lasting longer than usual. Do you know what's wrong.
Evelyn

Dear Evelyn:
You did not mention your age so I make an assumption. The symptoms you are describing most often occur during pre-menopausal times when estrogen levels begin to recede. This may happen in your late thirties, forties or fifties. It varies from woman to woman.

Irregularity may even increase. Times between menstruation become more extended, and yes, actual menstrual days can vary from what you experienced in the past or you may experience "spotting." If you are not in the 38 plus age category, we have to rule out menopause. In this case I suggest you see a gynecologist to make sure there are no other health conditions affecting your menstrual cycle.
