Fosomax prevents bone loss,
but what's the downside of this drug?

Dear Jacqui:
I am 62 yrs old and my doctor has prescribed Fosamax for me after a recent bone density test showed some bone loss. I've heard from various friends that they had problems with it. What are pros and cons regarding this drug?
Betty

Dear Betty:
There is substantial information available about Fosomax. In short, thebenefits are good protection against osteoporosis, increase of bone densitywith regular long term use. What are the known disadvantages? Two new studies have identified that gastrointestinal problems occur with unexpected frequency among users.

Nearly one in three women using this drug are complaining of upper gastrointestinal symptoms and other problems such as nausea, abdominal pain and heartburn. Studies also show that as many as 56% of patients fail to following exact dosing guidelines designed to help their bodies to properly absorb the drug, potentially reducing or eliminating the benefits it offers.
